The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a key role in supporting individuals in daily living activities, community involvement, and achieving personal goals. This position promotes independence, choice, and self-determination while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of each client.

Essential Duties

  • Provide respectful and person-centered care based on each individual’s needs and goals
  • Support clients with daily living skills such as cooking, hygiene, medication reminders, and housekeeping
  • Assist individuals in community activities (e.g., shopping, recreation, appointments, and social outings)
  • Encourage and support independence, decision-making, and skill-building
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services provided, behaviors observed, and incidents
  • Follow all health and safety protocols and ensure a clean, safe living environment
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and, when appropriate, families
  • Advocate for client rights and choices in all aspects of care
  • Participate in staff training and development sessions

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (required for transporting clients)
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening (per Arkansas DHS guidelines)
  •  1 – 2 years’ experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities preferred
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills

Work Environment

  • Residential settings may include travel within the community
  • May require lifting, transferring, or physical assistance
  • Must be able to respond quickly in emergencies
  • Employees’ homes may be used as workplace (approved DSS home inspection needed)
